Reception and Q&A to follow after the film.
France Revisited is back! Join us for an evening with Gary Lee Kraut and “Chez Jeannine - The Fabulous Bistro”
“Chez Jeannine - The Fabulous Bistro” is a tender and raucous portrait of an 80-year-old bistro owner whose rebellious spirit, sharp wit and immense generosity turn her tiny bistro in France into a refuge for life’s outcasts, neighbors and visitors, young and old. Filmed intimately with a 4K pocket camera, this feature film celebrates community, resilience and the magic of neighborhood bistros.
After the screening, we’ll show a 15-minute video in which Gary interviews the filmmaker Pierrick Bourgault. Pierrick has written 20 books about cafés and bistros. Chez Jeannine - the Fabulous Bistro is his first feature film. He shares a zero-budget, zero-carbon, immersive experience that’s both timeless and current.
Gary will then speak about the social role of cafés and bistros in France, their decline and occasional resilience, and alcohol consumption as it relates to the type of bistro presented in the film, including his own relationship with bistro life. Followed by a lobby reception.
