Jamison Standridge’s September selection is Pedro Almodóvar’s classic Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. This hilariously chaotic comedy is filled with eccentric characters, over the top scenarios, and is an explosion of style, irony, and laughs!
Join us for another Friday night pick by Jamison Standridge:
For my September selection I have chosen a film by my favorite living director: Pedro Almodóvar. From the first time I set eyes on the Spanish auteur’s style I knew I had found a filmmaker who had awoken something within me. From the impeccable production design, gorgeous costuming choices, and his vibrant and popping use of color, his movies are the definition of eye-candy. Ultimately, however, among the sumptuousness, melodrama, and heightened reality of his films, what would become an everlasting love for me would be the humanity he could conjure in his tapestries of femininity, in which emotion, pain, laughter, friendship, and sometimes even revenge could be celebrated and given center stage.
So mark your calendars for Friday, September 12 at 7:00pm - I can’t wait to see you all at the ACME!
The film: When Pepa Marcos' (Carmen Maura) lover Ivan (Fernando Guillén) suddenly leaves her without any explanation, she embarks on a strange journey to discover why. On the way she meets a variety of eccentric characters, including Ivan's son from a previous relationship (Antonio Banderas), his fiancee Marissa (Rossy de Palma) and a Shiite terrorist cell who have been secretly holding her best friend Candela (María Barranco) hostage. It's a film noir take on the romantic comedy. Rated R, 1h28m
I left the July screening of In the Mood for Love with a huge grin on my face. To see so many people engaged, excited, and passionate about the film we experienced and discussed as a group was truly touching. With this series I was hoping to connect with our community, and seeing that there is indeed an audience and desire for such opportunities is very special indeed!
