The lush and breathtaking beauty of the Alps, filmed with painterly grace under natural light from frigid winter to redemptive spring, provides the physical and emotional backdrop for 'Vermiglio,' Maura Delpero’s visionary film, which won the Silver Lion at the 2024 Venice Film Festival. This singular portrait of a sprawling family, set in the small, mountainous village of Vermiglio during the waning days of WWII, follows a series of dramatic, consequential events after the arrival of a taciturn Sicilian soldier (Giuseppe De Domenico), who hides out in town after deserting the army.

Hello! My name is Jamison Standridge and I have recently joined the Board of Directors of the ACME. In our effort to bring back Friday night film screenings, I will be hosting a personally curated pick once per month. I am a lifelong film lover, having studied and written about cinema and, in my capacity as a college professor, I've been teaching film for almost two decades now.
My first outing will be on Friday, June 13th and the film I've chosen is "Vermiglio", a film that was nominated for a Golden Globe for best foreign film and was longlisted for an Oscar this year. I have chosen this movie as my first one as a sort of introduction to myself. Although my name would never suggest it, I was raised in Rome, Italy and didn't move to the United States until I came here for college. This film also just won the Italian equivalent to the Oscar last month. "Vermiglio" also happens to be set in the region my grandmother was born in (Trentino-Alto Adige).
I will be sticking around post-showing for anyone who would also like to chat about the film, Italian cinema, or who wants to get to know me more. I am eagerly looking forward to the 13th!
