ACME welcomes Dylan Mayer, a New Hope film sleuth and his new Friday night series "Spotlight on Cinema". He has been a longtime audience member at the ACME and is proud to have Waitress as the maiden screening for his series, which aims to bring attention to a versatile lineup of titles/artists.
About the film: Jenna is a waitress in a southern, small-town diner, mired in an abusive marriage and newly, unexpectedly pregnant. This is not a baby she wants. Her respite: making the best pies anyone has ever eaten. Written and directed by Adrienne Shelly.
Adrienne Shelly directed three features in her lifetime - Waitress is the last in that lineup. She was 40 years old upon its completion. In addition to writing, acting and directing, Shelly was also a lyricist - - “The Bastard Song,” which she co-wrote with composer Andrew Hollander for her second feature (1999’s I’ll Take You There) is perhaps the most efficient way to convey her flavor: wistful with a touch of whimsy - both bitter and sweet.
Rated PG-13, 1h48m
