Join us for another Friday night pick by Jamison Standridge. For my August pick, the movie I have selected is Nights of Cabiria, set in my hometown of Rome. There was a time, before the days of the Hollywood blockbuster, when new films by foreign auteurs would draw a crowd and become both critical and box-office successes. No one was more beloved and revered than Italian director Federico Fellini. This Oscar winning film is an ode to the resilience of the human spirit, blending neorealism and surrealism, anchored by Giulietta Masina's magnetic performance as she looks for hope in all the wrong places.
Mark your calendars and I look forward to seeing you all on Friday, August 22nd at the ACME!
The film: Arthouse Theater Day 2025 Selection! In the role that won her the Best Actress award at Cannes, Giulietta Masina stars as “Cabiria,” a tough Roman streetwalker who, after a near-drowning by her pimp boyfriend, is swept off her feet by a square, but sympathetic, accountant…until a final disillusionment. Federico Fellini’s showcase for his wife won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film of its year. New 4K restoration.
Rated NR, 1h55m
I left the July screening of In the Mood for Love with a huge grin on my face. To see so many people engaged, excited, and passionate about the film we experienced and discussed as a group was truly touching. With this series I was hoping to connect with our community, and seeing that there is indeed an audience and desire for such opportunities is very special indeed!
