Foreign Fridays with Jamison: Monsoon Wedding

Join us for December's edition of 'Foreign Fridays with Jamison'!

You may notice that my series officially has a name now. In June I started programming movies and hosting a discussion afterwards, in hopes to engage with our incredible community. I was hopeful that there might be an untapped desire to share a communal experience around film and have the opportunity to talk afterwards about what was just shared, but I never would have expected it to go so well. Seven months in, this is now a highlight of each month for me, and it just felt appropriate to officially name this project, so "Foreign Fridays with Jamison" is officially a go, and you may see new series pop up starting in 2026!

December is a time of merry-making in the United States, with incredible customs, festivities, traditions, and beauty. Christmas, however, is not a global holiday, and I wanted to choose a film this month that still felt festive and bright, but perhaps explored another culture's take on celebration and togetherness, and what better way to tap into a similar spirit than a wedding? Mira Nair is a visionary filmmaker (as well as the mother of a certain newly elected mayor you may have heard about in the news) whose visual take on cinema is unmatched. Whether adapting Thackeray novels or stories about the immigrant experience, her films leave a mark, and none has done so more than Monsoon Wedding - a beautiful movie that is funny, heartwarming, surprising, and indelible.

So mark your calendars for Friday, December 12th at 7:00pm - I can't wait to see you all at the ACME!
