Hour of the Wolf Plus Discussion with Jamison Standridge

Join us for another Friday night pick by Jamison Standridge:

For my October selection I was inspired by Lambertville's enthusiastic celebration of Halloween, while still staying true to the spirit of my Friday night picks. This atmospheric and eerie film by Swedish auteur Ingmar Bergman stars Max von Sydow and Liv Ullmann and blends elements of Nordic legend, folklore, and the director's signature style and character. The movie itself is regarded by many critics and outlets as highly influential, as well as a foundational text for filmmakers like David Cronenberg and Andrei Tarkovsky. A gothic journey into the fantastical, impeccably acted, and highly imaginative, I hope you will join me as we usher in "spooky season" in cinematic arthouse style!

So mark your calendars for Friday, October 10th at 7:00pm - I can’t wait to see you all at the ACME!

The film: The most daring and experimental of the films Bergman shot on the island of Faro, Hour of the Wolf stars Max von Sydow as a haunted painter living in voluntary exile with his wife (Liv Ullmann). When the couple are invited to a nearby castle for dinner, things start to go wrong with a vengeance, as a coven of sinister aristocrats hastens the artist’s psychological deterioration. This gripping film is charged with a nightmarish power rare in the Bergman canon, and contains dreamlike effects that brilliantly underscore the tale’s horrific elements. Rated R, 1h30m
