Join us for April's edition of ‘Foreign Fridays with Jamison’!
It was about time that we ventured into Latin American cinema. Chile has, in recent years, been a place from which truly fascinating and mesmerizing films have emerged. Sebastián Lelio is one of the directors who has reliably churned out thought-provoking and visually scintillating films for over a decade now. Whether he is telling the story of a woman redescovering herself in her middle age (Gloria) or exploring queer love in an Orthodox Jewish community (Disobedience), his films never cease to amaze and move.
Arguably, no film of his has been more urgent or impactful as A Fantastic Woman, which went on to win the Oscar for best international film at the 90th Academy Awards. The film stars Daniela Vega as Marina, a transgender woman whose life changes after the loss of her partner. It is a story of resilience in the face of opposition and the bravery to live one's truth regardless of obstacles or hostility. It is also a visually breathtaking story with incredible cinematography, music, and sublime performances.
So mark your calendars for Friday, April 10th at 7:00pm - I can’t wait to see you at the ACME!
